Rye boys basketball team looks to continue their recent success
RYE, N.Y. — With fall sports coming to a close, winter sports are beginning to rev up, which means basketball season is right around the corner! For the Rye Garnets and their respected basketball team, they look to continue their recent success heading into this season.
To put some context behind this team鈥檚 success over the years, the Garnets have not had a full losing season since the 2014-15 season, in which they had an overall record of 6-10 and a league record of 3-5, which is definitely below average standards for them.
But since then, the Garnets overall have been outstanding, not losing more than five games overall in a season, totaling 73 wins and just 17 loses in five full seasons. Their winning traditions began to carry serious momentum after the 2014 season.
In their most recent full season dating back to 2019, offense was their calling card, registering 1,572 points and allowing 1,222 and taking pride in winning on their home floor with an eye-popping 10-1 record.
The Garnets had a historic season, being the first team in more than three decades to make it back and win their Section 1 championship game, with their beat down on defending state champion, Poughkeepsie, 74-55. This was when head coach John Aguilar believed his team was just starting to scratch the surface of what they could do the entire season and it showed in ultimate fashion as they put together their best performance at the most opportune time.
鈥淲hat they did, it鈥檚 hard to do,鈥� Aguilar stated regarding his ball club and them finally getting over the hump. 鈥淢y boys make it look easy, but that鈥檚 years and years of patience and a lot of focus for them. I鈥檓 really proud of them.鈥�
This was the Garnets鈥� first championship victory since their very first victory in 1989 and their first 20-win season. The winning ways of the Garnets will hope to be resumed this upcoming season, as many hope this was a sign of many things to come.
