Branford football looks to extend winning streak into final weeks

BRANFORD, Conn. — The Branford varsity football team is heading down the final stretch of what鈥檚 been a very successful season. The Hornets are led by a ferocious rushing attack that has eclipsed 200 yards three times in seven games.

Boasting a 6-1 record, the Hornets are currently ranked sixth within Connecticut鈥檚 Class M rankings. Coach John Limone鈥檚 team discovered its identity early on and they鈥檝e yet to stumble after dropping their season opener.

鈥淭hose first three games I think were really pivotal for us to kinda figure out who we were and what kind of kids we have and how we were gonna go about trying to win games on Friday nights,鈥 Branford head coach John Limone . 鈥淭hose first three (games) were all close and I think one of the best things it showed us early on was that we never quit.鈥

Branford is led by junior quarterback Zachary Turbert, who has proven to be a dual threat, attacking defenses both with his arm as well as his legs. The Hornets have dominated many of their games through the strength of their defense.

In seven games, Coach Limone鈥檚 defense has allowed just over 11 points per game. Sophomore linebacker Nathan Florio is not only third on the team in tackles, but he has a pair of interceptions, three pass deflections, two forced fumbles and a blocked punt.

The Hornets are seeking their first state playoff birth since winning it all back in 2005. It would also be Coach Limone鈥檚 first time reaching the postseason since he took the helm eight years back.

鈥淭he point of the matter is that of course, you want to be considered one of those top-flight programs,鈥 Limone . 鈥淚 say this to my kids all the time, when they鈥檙e done and it鈥檚 five, 10 years down the road, I want them to be proud of what they鈥檝e built.鈥

With just three regular-season games remaining on the schedule, Branford is in a very good spot to reach the playoffs. Yet, Coach Limone is uninterested in looking ahead. Rather, he鈥檚 focused on going 1-0 each week.

鈥淚 haven鈥檛 even looked at the standings,鈥 he . 鈥淗onestly I haven鈥檛. It鈥檚 too early and a lot of things can still happen. Plus, there鈥檚 a lot of math involved. But right now we鈥檙e sitting at 5-1 and we鈥檙e in a good spot and we certainly have a good opportunity to do some good things.鈥

The Hornets have three games left to go, all within their league, setting up for what will be a very exciting home stretch.

In their two league games thus far, Branford is averaging 207.0 rushing yards per game. In two weeks, the Hornets will take on the second-place Law Lawmen in what鈥檚 sure to be a marquee matchup.
