Richmond鈥檚 Sydney Boone looks to make an impact in freshman season
RICHMOND, Va. (BVM) — Sydney Boone is unselfish as they come and she鈥檚 walking into the A-10 with a chip on her shoulder.
Like a spider, she鈥檚 made a web of her own to protect her team and it鈥檒l be worth the while learning from a dynamic roster of talent.
The Richmond University women鈥檚 basketball team has one goal in mind and that鈥檚 to win their conference championship and make it to the NCAA tournament.
Freshman guard Boone looks to make a quick impact after leaving her mark at Highland Springs High School. In her junior season, she averaged 18.4 points per game and unfortunately didn鈥檛 get to compete in the state title game when COVID-19 intensified.
Boone is enjoying life as a student-athlete and told in October how the game of basketball differs from her high school experience.
鈥淎cademically, it鈥檚 a great school and also I鈥檓 only 30-minutes away from home. Just being able to have my friends and family able to come watch me play in college is amazing,鈥 Boone said. 鈥淐ollege is very detailed and everything that I do is very specific and everything I do on the court. Also, the coaches there are on me about the little things that no other coach has ever gotten on me about which has really opened my eyes about the game.鈥
With the necessary adjustments from head coach Aaron Roussell, the team has one goal in mind to bounce back from a subpar season.
鈥淗opefully getting to the A-10 championship and making a chance to get to the dance,鈥 Boone said.聽 鈥淭hat鈥檚 our goal as a team automatically once I got here. It was like that鈥檚 what we want to do in these four years that I鈥檓 here.鈥
It鈥檚 no surprise the McDonald’s All-American nominee didn鈥檛 hesitate to attend a university ranked No. 7 with the best athletic training facilities. Boone is precise in the pick-and-roll on offense and knows how to recover on defense if any small mistake is made on the other end of the floor. Boone knew in November 2020 when she committed to Richmond, she was the hidden gem needed to become apart of their family.
“I say first education,” . “Then Coaching staff and teammates. It’s like a bond there and I knew that they wanted me. It’s the feeling of being wanted. That’s very important. And of course, being home. That’s good too鈥
Last season in the A-10 championship game, the Lady Spiders were defeated by Saint Louis 59-58 in OT . A 13-9 overall regular season record shows how close Roussell and the coaching staff had heart to compete in a tough battle.
The Lady Spiders will open their season on Nov. 9 against the Charlotte 49ers in an exciting matchup.
