Jayden Olmstead: Lawton鈥檚 next man up

LAWTON, Okla. — Continuing our series of reports on untapped gems in Lawton; the next man on our watch list is Jayden Olmstead. This young man is full of belief, drive and passion to make it to the next level. Olmstead is 14 and he attends MacArthur High School in Lawton. He plays for the football team. Blessed with a burst of speed and a wide variety of passing style, the young man has played in a number of positions for his team. However, the most frequent options are as a quarterback or as a wide receiver. Currently, he plays as a quarterback.

Physical profile

Olmstead stands at 6-foot and weighs about 160 pounds. He is really starting to bulk up. He is athletic and has a relatively high running speed (sprint), quick acceleration and sharp change of direction. His arm span and reach are expansive.

Olmstead spends most of his time training, either at the gym or out on the field. As most aspiring quarterbacks do, he spends a lot of time training his upper body strength with dumbbells and the likes. In building his lower body, he favors the squat exercise routine.

Playing style

In the modern-day game of football, Olmstead is an improvisor kind of quarterback, like a Baker Mayfield mold player. He is the kind of player who can turn an awry attacking situation into a positive one or a first down or even a touchdown via an unexpected explosive play. These kinds of players are called improvisors.

The University of Oklahoma might have an improvisor in their freshman quarterback who is currently ahead of Rattler in the pecking order, Williams. These guys are not limited in their play and they can make the unexpected happen. As mentioned earlier, his greatest strength is his athleticism (may be on par with his throwing).

Usually, when his team are being defended aggressively and successfully, he is the kind of quarterback that can run with it, evading the high pressure with his feet and burst of pace before using his hands. An area of his game he will have to develop to go to the top of the list for most recruiting colleges is the ability to throw (make a pass) while running with the ball.

Traditionally, quarterbacks are not used to making a pass while running. Instead, they usually receive and find a pass on a spot or in a range. However, new breeds of quarterbacks are beginning to iron out this skill which has proved to be a game changer so many a times. Talk of Russel Wilson, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield and Mike Vick; these well-established players are masters at this 鈥渞unning with the ball and passing鈥 skill.

The good news is Olmstead doesn鈥檛 graduate high school until 2025, so he has a lot of time on his side to make this development. We might have a situation where he would go straight into the draft without even going to college if he continues this development projectile and nails down the skill.

Yes, that鈥檚 how potent the skill is.
