Dayton women鈥檚 basketball looking to continue A-10 dominance in 2021-22
DAYTON, Ohio — Women鈥檚 college basketball is starting up in Dayton for the first time this fall and there shouldn鈥檛 be much of a surprise that the Flyers had a lot of success last season after going 14-5 in the regular season and 12-1 in the Atlantic 10 conference. However, the Flyers weren鈥檛 able to continue their run last year after falling short in the Atlantic 10 championship to the No. 5 seed in the tournament, VCU.聽
The Flyers are playing their first game this year against Division II juggernaut IUP. Albeit, this is just an exhibition game, but the team is ready to get back out on the court, especially after getting their regular-season championship rings a couple of days ago.聽
鈥淥bviously we make a point to get these because you need to celebrate and value how hard it is to win a regular season championship鈥� . 鈥淚 mean it is hard right, especially last year, it was hard. We went 12-1, should have been undefeated, we know why we lost that one [game], but we came through and won a lot of other really hard games and tight games and this is what it is about.鈥澛�
Dayton鈥檚 two losses last year in the regular season came against the Akron Zips and the Saint Louis Billikens. The Billikens gave the Flyers their only loss in A-10 play. This ties into what Green said about being undefeated. There鈥檚 no doubt that she expects her team to carry a chip on their shoulder after what they suffered last year.聽
鈥淭his is what the expectation is, to get rings and to win championships,鈥� Green continued. 鈥淏ecause we know where we want to get and it is going to take a lot of hard work to get there.聽
There is no doubt that this team has a lot of expectations for this season, where they will play a lot of teams in power five conferences like Duke, Florida, Illinois and Clemson. The Flyers will have four graduate students on this team with Erin Whalen, Tenin Magassa, Araion Bradshaw and Jenna Giacone.聽
Whalen led the team in scoring last year with 13.6 points per game and averaged 4.8 assists per game. Giacone averaged 12.4 points per game, Magassa averaged 9.6 points per game and Bradshaw averaged 7.2 points per game.聽
Regardless of the competition that awaits this Flyers team, they will be prepared. They have a lot of players returning with a lot of experience under their belt and they are looking to repeat as Atlantic 10 regular-season champions and win the outright Atlantic 10 conference.
