Smitherman trio enjoy playing ball for Lovejoy HS and LeTourneau Yellow Jackets
LUCAS, Texas — The Smitherman family has three sons who are very talented athletes. Cade, Cason, and Eli Smitherman all have a love for baseball, while Eli also enjoys football and basketball.
Cade, now 20 years old, started playing baseball when he was just five years old and continued to play throughout his elementary and secondary education at Lovejoy High School. He is now a member of the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets baseball team.
While his personal goals are to be unhittable, he understands the commitment needed to attain that level means he has to maintain a routine in order to be consistent in the sport. Cade told us “Baseball is mental, not physical. I can’t get flustered and allow the umpires to influence my mental state. I have to control the game, not them.” When he is not playing baseball, Cade enjoys playing a round of golf.
Cason, a high school senior, is a member of the Lovejoy High School baseball team. In his years of playing ball, he knows that the confidence and the mental aspect of the game can be a big challenge, however, Cason has learned that the best thing he can do is “just play and let the results take care of themselves”. One of the things he loves about the sport is the ability to succeed. He understands that everyone on the team has an important job and the best way to succeed is to “always want it more than the other team.” Having seen much success on the field by earning a spot on the varsity team roster as a junior, Cason also has achievements off the field in the academic realm. He earned Academic All-District last year, and Junior National Merit on the 10th Grade PSAT. When he is getting ready for a game, he enjoys listening to Zach Bryan.
Eli, a freshman at Lovejoy High School, is in his seventh year of playing football. While he also plays baseball and basketball, he has found a feature he really enjoys about football that is not shared with the other two sports: legally tackling his opponents. While he is currently on the freshman team, he looks forward to the day when he will earn his place on the varsity team. One of the things that being a member of a team has taught Eli is that when you are on a team, you have responsibilities and others depend on you. His pregame routine includes listening to music by Drake. When he is not practicing, he has fun hanging out with his friends and being silly.
