Quarterback Devin Brown鈥檚 options are open
DRAPER, Utah — Quarterback Devin Brown from Corner Canyon High School is a fast riser in the high school rankings world. One might notice that Brown has jumped more than 100 spots in the Class of 2022 rankings to the 66th spot nationally, per .
The former Arizona native moved on from Queen Creek High School to Corner Canyon, citing a family issue as the primary reason why he made the move. During this time, high school football fans have seen Brown improve from a 3-star quarterback to a consensus 4-star ranking. He is also ranked as high as the fifth best quarterback for his draft class.
Chris Trevino notes the following as the bounty of reasons why he has been able to improve his status as a prospect so dramatically in such a quick period of time.
鈥淥verall, Brown has the nation-leading 3,557 passing yards (65.9 completion percentage), 40 passing touchdowns, 11 picks, 247 rushing yards and six more rushing scores in 10 games,鈥 Trevino . 鈥淗e is averaging 355.7 passing yards per game, No. 10 in the nation. Brown’s 40 passing touchdowns are second in the nation.鈥
The Draper signal caller committed to the University of Southern California (USC) over a year ago in September 2020. His meteoric rise as a prospect is welcome though, once you consider the recent vacancy for the USC head coaching position. Given the current standing at the helm of the USC football program, universities like Ohio State, UCLA and Texas have offered their respective names into the recruiting mix. At the moment, Brown still sees USC as the leader for his services and education.
“It’s pretty much the same,” Brown . “I lean there, but you just don’t know what is going to happen with coaches. We really just have no idea who they’re going to hire. I just have to be smart, look at all my other options and look at what schools are the best fit for me.鈥
It鈥檚 important to note that UCLA currently does not have a scholarship quarterback committed from the Class of 2022. Given that starter Dorian Thompson-Robinson is a senior, there is a level of urgency that is expected from their end in the recruiting process. Brown shared some insight into his experience meeting with the UCLA staff to John Garcia Jr. from Sports Illustrated.
鈥淕etting to meet Coach Gunderson and Coach Kelly and have good conversations with them on what they think of me and how I fit in with the program, not only as a player but as a person 鈥 it was a really good time in Westwood,鈥 Brown .
Despite the good time with UCLA, Brown maintains that his relationship with USC is still strong. Fans of the Torjans should not be too worried for now as they search for a head coach.
“I talk to Coach Donte (Williams) a lot more now, obviously, because he is the interim head coach,” Brown . “I talk to him a little bit more. My conversations with Coach Harrell and Coach Doege have stayed the same. Coach Harrell and Coach Donte were at my game on Wednesday, so it’s pretty much been the same with them.”
As Brown waits for USC to make their head coaching hire like the rest of us, he will adequately prepare for first ranked Corner Canyon鈥檚 playoff game against 16th ranked Kearns High School.
