Maryville soccer standout Nick Hemann impresses in St. Louis
MARYVILLE, Mo. — Maryville University of St. Louis recently earned some praise for one of their top soccer players.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Hemann took home Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for October 17-24.
This is the first time Hemann has received such an honor in the GLVC. He鈥檚 the first Saints soccer player to earn this award since Dom Riggio claimed it during the week of March 7 earlier this year. The last Maryville goalkeeper to earn this honor was Max Simonazzi in 2019, during the week of November 3.
And Hemann has certainly earned it. Maryville has won eight consecutive matches, and he has been at the center of all of them. He is enjoying a breakout season and has recorded six shutouts while allowing a total of just two goals over that stretch.
Hemann helped guide the Maryville Saints to two shutout wins over the weekend of October 22-24. He saw action in all 180 minutes over those two games. Maryville defeated the Screaming Eagles of the University of Southern Indiana on October 22 by a final score of 2-0. They picked up a 1-0 win on October 24 over the Bearcats of McKendree University. The Maryville, Illinois native faced nine shots over the course of those two matches and racked up four saves.
But Hemann鈥檚 soccer prowess goes back long before he ever committed to Maryville. He was quite the soccer star during his high school days as well.
Hemann went to Alton Marquette High School in Illinois and played soccer there for all four years. While there, he earned All-Sectional and All-State honors in his senior year. He was the starting goalkeeper in all four of his seasons at Alton Marquette High.
In his high school career, Hemann had quite the impressive record. He went 45-16-9 and recorded a total of 32 shutouts. He also played club soccer for St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Illinois, and was part of the team that went on to win its region in the elite clubs National League.
Hemann hasn鈥檛 slowed down since. He made his collegiate debut late in the 2020-21 season after not playing during the 2019-20 season. He saw action in the second half of a game between the Saints and the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University, and helped lead Maryville to a combined shutout victory. He currently leads the GLVC with an .815 save percentage and .50 goals against average.
And now, Hemann looks to build off of his success. The Saints are red-hot and if he continues on the trajectory he鈥檚 been on, he鈥檚 sure to lock up some more Player of the Week awards.
