Alicia Window continues to succeed in her soccer journey
WASHINGTON — Following a three-goal weekend, Alicia Window took home Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 11-17.
This season is full of firsts for Window: her first season playing in the United States, her first semester as a college student and her first time being primarily deployed as a midfielder.
Prior to joining George Washington University, Window had trained with some of the most talented athletes in the world, playing Under-21 and first-team soccer for her local club, Manchester City, in the women鈥檚 Super League.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a really good club,鈥 Window said. 鈥淭he facilities there, best in the world. 鈥 The team there is so nice, so welcoming. I actually did a TikTok with Lucy Bronze.鈥
Window made her professional debut for Manchester City this January in a match against Aston Villa.
This offseason, Window came to the United States after being promised substantial playing time by George Washington University. They have kept their promise, with Window tallying seven starts and making 12 total appearances through 17 games.
The Colonials have made a substantial change tactically, now playing her further up the pitch than Manchester City had.
鈥淚 actually came here as a center back because I played there at City previously,鈥 Window said. 鈥淏ut in training, I鈥檝e been scoring goals, so they鈥檝e tried me in midfield and I鈥檝e enjoyed playing there, getting on the ball and creating chances and having more shots. It鈥檚 more fun in midfield.鈥
With a laugh and a smile, Window explained that it had been a long time since she last was deployed in the midfield.
鈥淚 used to play in midfield about eight years ago, so it’s been a while since I鈥檝e been there,鈥 she said. “But I鈥檝e enjoyed it. The other players have been helping me as well, with what to do in certain situations.鈥
Despite the number of changes she鈥檚 had to deal with this season, Window has excelled in a new environment, leading the team with five goals on just ten shots.
However, the Colonials as a whole have struggled to build off Window鈥檚 success. Sitting at 3-12-2, they are on the outside looking in at the A-10 tournament with just one game left to play against Davidson.
In a period of transition, Window looks to be the face of an older Colonials鈥 roster currently led by graduate students Kelly Amador and Cammie Dopke, as well as senior Sammy Neyman.
With another three potential seasons ahead of her, Window has set high goals for herself and her team.
鈥淒efinitely a goal for these for years is win A-10s,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his season, it didn鈥檛 go off as well as we all thought it would, but that goal will be a goal for the whole four years.鈥
Window has impressed this season, highlighted by a goal within 12 seconds versus Dayton during her Rookie of the Week run.
She will play her final regular season game of the 2021 season on Sunday against Dayton with an A-10 tournament berth on the line.
