Florida Gators freshman guard Elijah Kennedy bringing youthful energy

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — People react differently when faced with something new or when venturing into unknown territory. The reaction could be detrimental and cause a setback or it could deliver an unexpected but welcomed boost. It all comes down to perception. How one views this new chapter that’s vastly approaching their lives has a direct impact on our ability to perform. For freshman Elijah Kennedy, it has always been his dream to be with the Florida Gators.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Virginia Beach, Virginia has recently graduated from Green Run High School and is anticipating his first practice with the Florida Gators basketball team. It’s a feeling he had doubted would ever come to fruition given his injury history. Two years prior to committing to UF, his leg was immobilized. Kennedy was in a straight leg cast for three months which were then followed by nine months of physical therapy. It was a year-long recovery process but his determination to get back on the court and prove his worth kept his hooping aspirations alive.

Kennedy has received a great deal of praise for his basketball skills. In 2021, he was the Virginia High School Coaches Association Class 5 State Player of the Year. He’s a two-time first team All-State honoree. But more importantly, he helped his high school to a shared state championship back in 2020 and a state runner-up finish in 2021. Winning trophies and reaching finals is a part of his grittiness attitude to succeed no matter the obstacle or injury. Kennedy will add that winner’s mentality to the Gators.

The proof is in the performance. Kennedy scored 37 points with nine three-pointers in a single game during the 2021 regionals, an outing that would be classified as a MVP caliber-type performance. He followed that display by notching 27 points in the state semifinals and then hit 21 points in the championship game. Kennedy doesn’t hide away from the spotlight; he doesn’t shrug or pass along responsibility. He knows that he’s able to deliver and wants his team to be aware that they can rely on him.

Florida Gators’ coach, Mike White, seems to believe in Kennedy’s ability. The freshman is a strong, smooth-shooting left-hander who also happens to be an aggressive defender. Kennedy will also bring with him his winning experience and joins a lengthy line of Gators from Virginia like established NBA player Dorian Finney-Smith and superstar teammate Keyontae Johnson. Above all, Kennedy wants to be with the Gators. That is the most important characteristic in a recruit. There’s nothing more detrimental than an athlete who doesn’t want to play for the team, the university and the city which is what makes freshman guard Elijah Kennedy such a valuable asset for years to come.
