What to expect from the SCDS Hornets baseball team in the new season
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Country Day School’s baseball team, the Hornets, will be brimming with confidence when they kick off their new season in Jan. 2022.
The varsity will play its first game on Jan. 17 at the Playing Fields–Baseball Complex against Jenkins High School. The Hornets will be the favorites to win the game, courtesy of home ground and crowd. Their last game has been scheduled against Liberty County on April 13 at home.
A total of 30 games are played every year.
The Hornet ended the last season on a high, having finished as the Region Runner-up in 3A Private. The team clinched 20 wins in the season and qualified for the Elite Eight round of the Georgia High School Association State Class A Private Playoffs as well.
The players showed how well head coach Nathan Ward and assistant coach Scott Karnibad have honed their skills in a brief period. Their biggest win of the season came against St. Andrews School in the home game held on April 1. The Hornet won 18-0. Their biggest loss (15-0) was reported against Savannah Christian Prep School in the home game on April 7. If the team continues to improve their skill set, their winning percentage in the road games can surge and more players can get in the limelight with individual honors.
Cole Meyer was the star of the campaign. The Hornets prodigy stood head and shoulders above players throughout the season. The senior player hit four homers during the playoff matches, setting a new school record for single-season home runs with 14.
Meyer, Cade Garola, Barry Kleinpeter and Roman Smith were selected to the first team All-Region, while the second team honors were awarded to Ryan Beamon, Luke Everett, and Ty Schneider.
Smith and Garola won the Co-Pitcher of the Year award, whereas Dalton Brown was awarded the Rookie of the Year award. Rooster Bing bagged the Teammate of the Year award and Ty Schneider won the School Record Hit-by-Pitch trophy. Ryan Beamon, Jon Day and Leiden van Abshoven were named scholar athletes.
Winning 20 of the 30 league games showed that the Hornets have what it takes to beat tough sides in away games. The April 30 game was the biggest breakthrough for the team when they cemented a spot in the Sweet 16.
Meyer was again the best player on the field, helping the Savannah Country Day take two of three from Eagles Landing Christian to advance to the Class A Private Sweet 16. However, the team went on to lose the next away fixtures to Tattnall Square Academy in the best 2-of-3 series.
