MILFORD, Mich. — The Lake Orion Boys Varsity Cross Country Team and the Oxford Girls Varsity Cross Country Team both won the Oakland Country Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 9^th at Kensington Park in Milford. The course and the terrain put forth a brutal challenge for all the athletes as the recent rains made an already hilly and tough course even tougher, but both teams were determined to make the best of it and push themselves to excel.

The Dragons put on an incredible performance posting a 75 to take first place over Milford in second with 143, Walled Lake Northern in third with 145, and Detroit Catholic Central in fourth with 146. In total, 37 teams competed in this year’s championship meet.

Leading the team to victory were five seniors. Adam Hafeli finished fifth overall with a time of 16:35.5, Clayton Kuiper finished sixth with a time of 16:53.9, Will Houvener finished eighth with a time of 17:03.4, Hong Bing Tang placed 13^th with a time of 17:08.8, and Ronnie Leonard finished 43^rd with a time of 18:00.6. Rounding out the Lake Orion varsity team were also Jacob Gleason and Luke Peardon.

In the girls’ race, the competition was tight for first place with the Wildcats posting a 111 and the Walled Lake Northern Knights posting a 116. South Lyon East finished third with 125, Troy finished fourth with 173, and Rochester finished fifth with 243.

Leading the way for the Oxford team was freshman Mallory Bigelow who finished fifth overall with a time of 19:31.2. Joining Mallory was sophomore Braydee Elling who placed 13^th with a time of 20:12.4, freshman Taylor Brodeur placed 15^th with a time of 20:18.3, freshman Jamie Patterson placed 42^nd with a time of 21:12.3, and senior Jessa Chapin who finished 45^th with a time of 21:20.1.
