All eyes are on Sun Prairie quarterback Jerry Kaminski
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis 鈥� Jerry Kaminski has waited long enough. This is his season to shine and the Sun Prairie Cardinal signal caller is taking advantage of every snap.
He split time with senior Brady Stevens last year. That part-time play gave Kaminski a chance to show his hometown what he鈥檚 capable of. In limited action, he completed 58% of his passes for 586 yards and seven touchdowns to just one interception. Not bad for a sophomore.
But this year, Kaminski has taken his play to a whole new level, leading an explosive Cardinals offense to a 10-0 record and now, it鈥檚 more than just his hometown taking notice.
A quick look at his 2021 season so far and it鈥檚 easy to see why the college scouts have eyes on this guy:
In the season opener Kaminski went 19-of-26 passing for 343 yards and four total touchdowns.
In week two, he completed 12 of 16 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns and he ran 54 yards for another score. If you鈥檙e counting along, that鈥檚 eight touchdowns in the first two weeks. But the offense was just warming up.
By the fourth game, Kaminski and the entire Sun Prairie squad were firing on all cylinders. The Cardinals scored 34 points 鈥� in the first quarter. After throwing for 145 yards and three touchdowns, he was pulled and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines.
A week later he threw for 160 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown bomb, in a 50-7 win over Madison Memorial and last Friday against Madison East, he connected on a 67-yard scoring pass and scrambled for a six-yard scamper to the end zone. That run put his team up 48-0 with six minutes left before halftime.
That鈥檚 the most impressive part of Kaminski鈥檚 eye-popping stats. He never gets to play four full quarters. The Cardinals are averaging a 38-point margin of victory, so the starters consistently find themselves cheering on the second stringers in the second half of every game.
He鈥檚 proving he鈥檚 ready to play at the next level, even if his football resume only includes first-half highlights. At 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, he鈥檚 got the size, the college-ready arm and the football smarts. His stats grab attention, but his poise and maturity demand it. Leading his team to dominant wins only adds to the intrigue. So, it鈥檚 no surprise he鈥檚 been rather busy lately.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all been just crazy,鈥� Kaminski said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a great opportunity to get to visit schools and have them take an interest in me. The schools I鈥檝e been in the most contact with are Wisconsin, Nebraska, Wyoming, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State and North Dakota. It will be hard to fit everything in, because schools like Wyoming and North Dakota are hard to get to on a day鈥檚 notice. But whatever I can fit in, I want to go visit.鈥�
The 2021 season isn鈥檛 over. The Cardinals have a lot of football left to play and a lot left to play for and who knows what his senior season will bring. But even after he takes his last snap in Sun Prairie, it鈥檚 a good bet you鈥檒l see Jerry Kaminski behind center again. It isn鈥檛 a question of if he plays at the next level–it鈥檚 where. He has a few road trips on his schedule before fans know the answer to that one.
