Seattle University鈥檚 Morgan Gill-Young takes long road to jumping success
SEATTLE — To get success in anything, talent is not the only thing you want. Success also requires the best decisions and luck. Hence, achieving success for Morgan Gill-Young was not an easy task. But now, Gill-Young is a successful and talented athlete at Seattle University.
Morgan, a former Junior Olympian, was from an athletic family and was inspired by her father. She excelled in track and field as a triple jumper and was well known when she was in high school at Seattle鈥檚 Holy Names Academy.
Gill, after graduating from high school, joined Washington State University. This change in atmosphere from high school to university didn鈥檛 suit her. She struggled through this. Her freshman year was the most difficult one for her. At that time, her coach 鈥淚f I did choose to stay, I probably wouldn鈥檛 travel but to keep working, but you should probably start looking at a division two school.鈥
Gill took it seriously and decided to take a break and left the university. She left WSU in 2018 and to maintain her academics joined Bellevue College.
鈥淚 decided I would take a break from the track, see what I need to do at home, and if I鈥檓 meant to come back to it, then I will,鈥 she told . 鈥淏ut if my track career is supposed to be over, I learned a lot from the sport, and I walked away.鈥
After enrolling in Bellevue College, she started playing tennis, but track and field was the thing for her. She decided to start training again. Gill鈥檚 family has always been supportive.,
鈥淲atching her go through this, I said to her you are the captain of your ship. And, none can determine your destination, but you and you have to realise that,鈥 Her father, Kenneth Young, told .
Her freshman year 2018 didn鈥檛 go well for her. But there was better to come. 2019, she decided to find herself again as an athlete. That鈥檚 when she enrolled at Seattle University.
鈥淚, when it came time for me to look for a school, looked at Seattle U鈥檚 roster and with my marks, if I put my mind to it, I could come back and do this, so I did,鈥 she said.
When she came back, the jumping coach Toney Monroe was quite impressed by her.
She had a record-setting performance at Fresno, California. She set a personal record in triple jump, which was 39 feet, 10 inches, also in the long jump, which was 18 feet, 3 inches. She has been included in school鈥檚 top 10 marks in the high and long jump.
鈥淪he did well in the long jump in Fresno, California. She has taken on the high jump and added to her arsenal a three-foot PR to her triple jump,鈥 her coach at Seattle University, Toney Monroe, said. 鈥淚t is great to have a three-pronged athlete. Where is she going to score this week is always a question.鈥
With her ability, the answer to the question is that Gill-Young will score higher and jump farther.
