Lafayette Leopards football looking to start first season win streak against Fordham

EASTON, Pa. — The Lafayette Leopards got into the winner’s circle for the first time this season with a 24-14 win over Penn. Ah-Shaun Davis completed 12-of-18 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. Michael Hayes had a workmanlike 58 yards on 18 carries. Wide receiver Joe Gillette was all over the field, scoring a touchdown both receiving and rushing.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Leopards got consistent pressure on the quarterback, forcing three interceptions. Two of those were by Billy Shaeffer, who returned one for a touchdown.

A big issue so far this season has been the offensive line that has allowed 17 quarterback sacks. When Davis and the rest of the Leopards’ quarterbacks have had time to throw, they have some weapons to work with. Julius Young, Joe Gillette, Jordan Hull, and tight end Mason Gilbert have combined for 56 receptions for 665 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Jade Sutton leads the Leopards with 146 yards on 32 carries.

Fordham took down Stony Brook, 31-14, for their first win of the season. Tim DeMorat threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and has 1,005 yards and 10 touchdowns over the first four games. The Leopards need to get consistent heat up front or DeMorat will pick apart the secondary, finding the likes of Fatis Kokosioulis, Hamze El-Zayat, Dequece Carter and Max Wright. The quad has a combined 66 catches for 880 yards and 10 touchdowns. Antonio Cortez Feria rushed for 111 yards against Stony Brook and Trey Wilson has accounted for 201 yards on the ground for the season. Defensively, the Rams held Stony Brook to 3.8 yards per carry.

The Rams will give the Leopards a stern test in their conference and home opener. A win would give the boost they need when they take on the Bucknell Bison at home on Oct. 9.
