Georgetown Hoyas football fizzle-out late against Columbia in Lou Little Trophy tilt
WASHINGTON — Normally 368 yards and a pair of touchdowns from a backup quarterback in addition to 190 yards from a wideout would be a winning combination but for Pierce Holley, Cameron Crayton and the Georgetown Hoyas it wasn’t enough as the Columbia Lions defeated the Hoyas Saturday afternoon 35-24 to reclaim the Lou Little Trophy on their home turf.
Despite both teams starting the game in great field position, it took some time for the offenses to get going. It would be the Lions who would strike first with a 46-yard pass to Wills Meyers that set up the game’s first points on a Tyson Edwards four-yard rush. After forcing a Georgetown punt on the ensuing series, the Lions came back with another offensive haymaker; this time in the form of a 63-yard run from Dante Miller that helped Columbia extend to a 14-0 lead.
But the Hoyas wouldn’t go away so easily. After starting 0-3 on third down, Georgetown was gifted a conversion on a Columbia pass interference penalty that helped set up a two-yard rush by Joshua Stakely that put the Hoyas on the board.
Just 15 seconds after the Hoyas score, Lions’ return man Will Allen took the ensuing Georgetown kick 92 yards to the house; making it a 21-7 game. The Hoyas responded as their passing game opened up and set up a 6-yard QB scamper by Holley to cut into the Lions’ lead once again.
For a time it looked like the Hoyas had turned the tide as they held Columbia to two 40-yard field goal attempts before the half (the Lions converted on one of those attempts) and their aerial attack continued to cause problems for the Lions’ defense. That was until Columbia defender Ben Mathiasmeier jumped a route just outside the red zone for an interception and 68-yard return that set up an easy rushing touchdown from a yard out.
While the Hoyas would close the gap to 28-24, they were ultimately done in by penalties and a resurgent Lions’ rushing attack co-piloted by Ryan Young (19 carries 93 yards) and Dante Miller (7 carries 86 yards).
The Hoyas will look to bounce back Oct. 2 at home against 1-3 Colgate. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
