Lecanto Panthers vie for chance at winning season

LECANTO, Fla. (BVM) — After a slow start to the season, the Lecanto Panthers look to cement their second win Friday night against the Fivay Falcons.

The Panthers had a dominating 40-24 performance over Citrus High School for their first season win before dropping their most recent contest to Belleview, 34-14. Squaring up on the road at Falcon Stadium, another Lecanto win could be in the cards. Though Fivay High School is coming off two straight winning seasons and recorded its first season victory in a commanding 28-0 performance over Ancolte, the Falcons have struggled to produce much more. Fivay has been shut out in all but one matchup this season and has given up 35 or more points in each loss. Entering Friday’s meeting, eyes will be on Lecanto’s leading scorers to get the job done.

Standout running back Luke Malmberg has amassed 441 rushing yards through 41 carries and is responsible for seven touchdowns this season for the Panthers. The senior is looking to break his personal record Friday night after he recorded 446 rushing yards during his 2019-20 season.

Lecanto will also look to junior wideout Darius Gainer to propel the squad to victory. Gainer had a monster performance in the Panthers’ win over Citrus with 74 rushing yards and a pick-six, and shined on special teams with two kickoff returns for 118 yards and a touchdown. With only six games remaining, Lecanto looks to improve their record to 2-3 and regain the possibility of their first winning season since 2015.
