Mountain Hawks continue to scuffle with conference games looming
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh Mountain Hawks entered Saturday鈥檚 game against Princeton having lost their first two contests to Villanova and Richmond by a combined 78-6. They looked to show some form of life heading into the first conference game against Colgate on Sept. 25.
Things went from bad to worse and inconceivably, the Mountain Hawks found themselves down 32-0 after three quarters. They fell by the same margin and had Princeton not gone into shutdown mode, Lehigh could have been blown out by 50.
How bad in fact has Lehigh been to start the season? Consider the fact that they have now been outscored 110-6. Princeton was strong in 2019, going 8-2, but the Ivy League schedule was cancelled last season. If there was any rust, it wasn鈥檛 evident against Lehigh.
Offensively, the Mountain Hawks had 117 yards passing, averaging only 3.8 yards per completion. On the ground, the leading rusher was Gaige Garcia with a mere 12 yards on four carries. Eric Johnson had a nice afternoon receiving, hauling in four passes, but for only 33 yards.
How inefficient has the offense been this season? Quarterbacks Cross Wilkinson, Alec Beesmer, and Dante Perri have thrown for only 257 yards with six interceptions. Beesmer is tied for the team lead in rushing yards with 60, and no receiver has reached 10 receptions or 100 yards.
Lehigh has a shot to get back on track against Colgate, who have also looked less than stellar in out of conference play. They have been outscored 102-10 in losses to Boston College, Stony Brook, and WIlliam & Mary.
At this point, putting a touchdown on the board will be a moral victory for Lehigh.
