Leopards show promise despite falling to New Hampshire

EASTON, Pa. — After back-to-back road losses to the Air Force and William & Mary by a combined 59-17, the Leopards showed some fight in their home opener against New Hampshire. They played tough and competitive through three quarters before falling, 19-10. New Hampshire improved to 3-0 with the win, while Lafayette is now 0-3.

Lafayette quarterback Ah-Shaun Davis completed 16-of-23 passes for 192 yards and an interception. Jaden Sutton gained a respectable 41 yards on only 10 carries, but as a team the Leopards’ run game was held to 41 yards on 25 carries. Jordan Hull and Joe Gillette showed they can be counted on in the passing game, combining for 9 receptions and 139 yards.

The Leopards lone touchdown came on a 93-yard kickoff return from Michael Hayes, who could be a difference maker once conference play begins. Kicker Micah Pettit hit both field goal tries and has hit all three PATs and 3-of-4 field goal attempts this season.

Despite allowing 135 yards on the ground, the Leopards held New Hampshire to 3.5 yards per carry. An area of weakness to shore up moving forward is the pass defense that allowed 249 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Lafayette faces the Penn Quakers next week before beginning conference play at home against Fordham on October 2.
