De La Salle football bounce back with win after losing streak ends
CONCORD, Calif. 鈥 De La Salle came into their Week 4 game with questions lingering after their 318-undefeated streak came to an end at the hands of St. Francis. They went into this week against one of the San Diego section鈥檚 top teams in Cathedral Catholic. The Spartans, however, showed resilience and character to prove that they haven鈥檛 lost their winning touch with a 49-21 win.
De La Salle coach, Justin Alumbaugh, knew that getting back to winning ways was crucial.
鈥淚f we played like we did last week, they would have beat us,鈥 Alumbaugh said.
Initially, the Spartans looked set for back-to-back losses after going down 14-0 in the first quarter. The game was flipped upside down from key players; Charles Greer, who rushed for 237 yards and scored three touchdowns, along with Journey McKoy, and Zeke Berry whose interceptions were crucial to the Spartans鈥 comeback.
Cathedral Catholic rushed to a 14-0 lead through Lucky Sutton and Charlie Mirer. However, De La Salle鈥檚 A.J. Bianchina would score a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 14-7. McKoy would follow up with a 31-yard interception return, which allowed Greer to score his first touchdown of the game with a 13-yard run. 14-14, tied game.
Berry grabbed the lead with both hands as he ran for a 44-yard touchdown to give the Spartans a 21-14 lead. Berry, at the heart of the play again, would grab another interception, which led to another lung-bursting run from Greer to score a 37-yard touchdown, 28-14. Cathedral Catholic scored a 34-yard touchdown pass to Mirer, but Greer鈥檚 determination would see him score an 80-yard touchdown run, with Luke Dermon finishing the game with two 1-yard touchdown sneaks, ending the game with a 49-21 win.
