Mendham shutout by Chatham 35-0, Chatham鈥檚 first 3-0 start in 10 years
MENDHAM, N.J. — The Mendham Minutemen struggled against the Chatham Cougars this past Friday night. The Cougars embarrassed the Minutemen on their home field, 35-0. The win over Mendham made this Cougar team the first to start 3-0 since 2011.
There were some players who stood out like senior Jax Ulbrich who rushed for three touchdowns, two in the second half, per sources. That Cougar offense continued to be electric all game, sophomore to sophomore Jackson Hodges threw an 11-yard scoring strike to Bryce Kania in the second quarter.
Junior quarterback Gio Del Rio even pitched on the offensive masterpiece displayed on Friday. He returned from a knee injury to put together the final daggering touchdown in the fourth quarter to the Minutemen.
The Minutemen must go back to the drawing board and work on the triple option that they notoriously run. Their offense didn鈥檛 get any closer than the opposing 30-yard line. Not to mention, the two turnovers that destroyed their momentum.
“This was a tough offense to prepare for,” . “It’s hard for our scout team to mimic the triple option on offense. I’m very happy our defense was able to get a shutout. Mendham had scored two touchdowns in every game they’ve played so far.”
While the disappointing loss hurt enough already, there were several touchdowns that got called back throughout the game for the Cougars that would have made this margin that much bigger. Ulbrich had a 69-yarder called back by flag late in the second quarter.
All in all, it was a humiliating loss for the Minutemen but they have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow night on the road. As they search for their first win on the season against the 2-1 Randolph Rams.
