De La Salle football defeats St. Mary’s of Stockton in dominating fashion

CONCORD, Calif. — Last week saw several varsity football games postponed in the Bay Area. It was a hot one as temperatures rose to triple digits, coupled with an Air Quality Index that came close to surpassing the level which would have prevented any sporting event from taking place.

However, with a change in venue and slight rescheduling, De La Salle was able to go on to victory with a 52 – 16 score line against St. Mary’s of Stockton. Although the score line would suggest different, the first half of the game belonged to St. Mary’s, De La Salle roared back in the second half to win the game.

St. Mary’s took a 3-0 lead in their opening series thanks to a short field goal. De La Salle responded with an 80-yard drive with Charles Greer scoring a 34-yard touchdown to take the game to 7-3. It didn’t take long for St. Mary’s to take the lead again, as Cruz Herrera found Jason Calvin for an 80-yard touchdown, Herrera would finish the game with 9 of 13 passes completed for 164 yards and two touchdowns before a heavy tackle from defensive back Zeke Berry forced the quarterback out of the game.

Kicker Jordan Kennedy then scored a field goal to level the game at 10-10. Although De La Salle seemed committed to breaking the tie, taking the ball to the 10-yard line, Greer would fumble and St. Mary’s recovered. It didn’t take long for De La Salle to find the lead as senior defensive lineman JJ Tofaeono hit Herrera in the end zone, losing the ball, allowing Tyler Henry to score the touchdown. 17-10 De La Salle.

St. Mary’s were able to make it 17-16 through Herrera connecting to Brooks Wheatley for a 26-yard pass. However, failed to score the two-point conversion. Amarion Houston’s interception kept De La Salle’s lead going into the second half.

The second half saw scoring runs from Greer, who ended the game with 91 yards and two touchdowns, 24-16 De La Salle. Luke Dermon, De La Salle’s quarterback, on his first start, extended the lead to 31-16 with a 1-yard run, before AJ Bianchina made it 38-16. Zeke Barber would go on to score the final two touchdowns, the latter from a 60-yard play. 52-16 De La Salle.
