Rye Garnets overcome adversity, to start the season 2-0
PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — Despite having to play their home opener in a different stadium due to flooding issues from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, the Rye Garnets second consecutive win came in convincing fashion as they beat Clarkstown North 28-12.
The win came behind a monster day on the ground for senior running back Caden Whaling, rushing for an eye-popping 200 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Owen Kovacs also had a solid performance completing 6 of 12 passes, with 153 total yards and delivering a well-placed touchdown strike to senior Ryan Surhoff with the defender all over him.
Defensive back Mason Mccomb came up with the play of the game as Clarkstown North was looking to close the gap at the goal line. Mccomb read the play perfectly, as he caught a one-handed interception on fourth and goal. This ultimately silenced any potential momentum swing from the opposing team. Even with limited practice and a change of scenery, the Garnets still came away victorious and are now 2-0 despite the adversity the team faced.
Rye鈥檚 next game is away at Tappan Zee on Friday, Sept.17 at 7 p.m.
