Colorado Rams football seek first victory against tough Toledo team
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Colorado State Rams suffered yet another devastating loss as they forfeited a 14-point lead to the Vanderbilt Commodores of the Southeastern Conference.聽 The week 2 loss came after a season opening loss to FCS school South Dakota State.
The game against Vanderbilt was a winnable one as the Rams scored two early touchdowns from senior running back David Bailey.聽 Bailey was just one of the standout performances for the Rams in this one with 80 rushing yards and 36 receiving yards to go with those two touchdowns.聽 Top NFL tight end prospect Trey McBride continued his standout senior season for Colorado State picking up eight more catches and 114 yards to go with a 3-yard touchdown late in the 4th quarter to tie the game for the Rams. This was not enough however, as Vanderbilt answered right back with a game winning field goal with just 19 seconds remaining to secure the three-point victory.
Colorado State鈥檚 defense shot themselves in the foot on that last drive by the Commodores as they had a pass interference and targeting call against them to set Vanderbilt up.聽 McBride and the Rams will now look for their first win of the season at Toledo in a tougher than anticipated matchup for them just a week ago.
After an easy week 1 win for Toledo against lesser opponent Norfolk, the Rockets went into South Bend to give the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a surprise run for their money. Toledo trailed that game until late in the 2nd quarter and it was back and forth the rest of the way from there.聽 They went ahead with just minutes left on the clock but the No. 8 team in the country was able to answer right back on a touchdown strike of their own with one minute left to pull off the victory for the Irish.
In order for Colorado State to have a chance against this high-powered offense in Toledo the defense will have to show up in a big way. Colorado State鈥檚 offense has been solid but hasn鈥檛 led them to any wins thus far. Senior quarterback Todd Centeio has led the way for the Rams this season with 542 yards passing, three touchdown passes, and 85 rush yards this season.聽 Helping him out has been McBride with 230 total receiving yards and Dante Wright with 146 receiving yards for the Rams. hose two account for 376 of 542 passing yards for Centeio and will have to be big this Saturday.
The Rams will need to get going early and capitalize on those opportunities as they had a chance last week to be up 28-0 in the first half but failed on the execution in the end.聽 The matchup against Toledo will be a tough one but fun to watch
