Forsyth Central Bulldogs start the season with a new coach and quarterback

CUMMING, Ga. – This 2021-22 high school football season promises competitiveness, and with teams like Forsyth Central on the field, anything is possible. The Bulldogs enter the season with a new coach. For five consecutive years, Frank Hepler was the football coach and ended the season with an even league record, making the team lose relevance.

In this new season, Forsyth Central gives David Rooney the opportunity. Rooney is familiar to the team as he has worked with Hepler as a defensive backs coach since 2018. But the time has come for Rooney to take center stage and change the Bulldogs game.

Last year’s team posted an overall record of 4-4 and an unfavorable league record of 1-4. The Bulldogs had a poor 2017-18 season as well when both their overall and league records were 0-10 and 0-5, respectively.

The Bulldogs returned to the field with a new coach and a quarterback after star Bronson Landreth graduated in 2020. To replace Landreth are players Koby Balthazor and Drew Mullvain competing to be the quarterback in the season. The coach believes both boys have a lot of potentials.

Mullvain has accumulated 192 yards in the two games he has played, and Balthazor has 59 yards playing in front of Northview. It looks like junior player Mullvain will be the new quarterback.

Forsyth Central will also say goodbye this year to Malachi McElroy, Marcus Brown, and Patrick Haertel, seniors who have given their lives for the team. With these players leaving the team and new players entering, maybe the Bulldogs will clean up their record of failures and begin a new season of victories.

For last season, the team occupied a 4-4 overall record, advancing slightly compared to the 2019 record, where it obtained a 4-5. But Rooney, the new Bulldogs coach, is not looking for small advances but for the team to change the score completely.

Rooney fulfills his goals because the Bulldogs started the season in high spirits, blasting Northview with an impressive 62-0 score line. However, they had a close game against Loganville, where they lost 28-24.

On Sept. 10 the team returned to the field again to compete against Cambridge, who has also accumulated 1 win and 1 loss on the season. Cambridge arrives in the new season with Craig Bennett, a former coach who has not closed the cycle of losses with his team. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the team was easily handled by Cambridge who won 35-0.

On Sept. 17, the Bulldogs will have a tough game against the Creekview Grizzlies, who have won their first two games of the season.
