George Washington striker Oscar Haynes Brown approaches school record book with pair of goals against VMI
WASHINGTON, D.C. 聽— Following his pair of goals against the Virginia Military Institute, Oscar Haynes Brown is now on the verge of joining the top ten goal scorers in school history.
George Washington defeated Virginia Military Institute 4-0, with Brown leading the way. His goal in the second minute set the tone early as George Washington dominated in their opening game of the season on August 26.
Brown struck again for the Colonials鈥 3rd goal in the 47th minute following a give-and-go with junior midfielder Elias Norris.
With plenty of soccer left to play this season, the prolific striker is on track to cement himself as one of the best goal scorers in team history. His 24 goals across five seasons leaves Brown just three goals shy of the 27 goals that Orville Reynolds, Kenny Emson, and Marcelo Valencia scored to tie for ninth most goals all-time in their years at GW.
When asked about how it felt to be so close to joining the record books, Brown smiled and shared his excitement to stamp his place in school history.
鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know I was that close. I didn’t know at the start of the season; it was in an article somewhere that I was five goals away. Only three now, so if I could do that in the next couple of games that鈥檇 be a really big achievement for me.鈥
George Washington has high hopes that their win over VMI is the first of many to come this season. Following their 2-0 defeat to Fordham University in the Atlantic-10 Championship game this past spring, GW is set to again challenge for the Division title.
All 24 members of last season鈥檚 team have returned to compete again this season, alongside three new additions. The continuity in the locker room has helped the team bond and remain driven to right the wrongs of last season.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely helped that we had all the people that experienced losing the A-10 Final last year because we鈥檝e all felt that pain, and we don鈥檛 want to go through that again,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a good thing because we know how each other play now and we know we鈥檙e capable of getting to that point, we were just one game away from winning the A-10.鈥
The Colonials will get their chance for revenge against Fordham on Sept. 25, when they visit the Rams for a rematch in New York.
Despite being three weeks away, Brown noted that game as one the team has been paying attention to.
鈥淲e definitely want to get that win in the rematch, because that one hurt,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淭hat one hurt a lot.鈥
George Washington has had a solid start to their season, following their 4-0 win against VMI with a comeback 1-1 draw against cross-town rivals Howard University.
Their season will continue with a match Friday against Columbia University, who will be playing in their first match since a 0-4 loss to Cornell University on Nov.16, 2019.
