Ella Farthing鈥檚 athletic heritage paves the way for her success at Regina

REGINA, Saskatchewan — Female basketball player, Ella Farthing, started playing prep basketball as a Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School student, where she played point guard for the LeBoldus Golden Suns.聽

She was born in 2001 to the family of Dan and SueAnn Farthing, both of whom are athletes. In addition, her two siblings, Jasmine and Theron, are also athletes. Hence, it is no surprise to see Ella excel in athletics.

Dan Farthing, Ella鈥檚 father, played football for the Holy Cross Saskatchewan High School, making a name for himself. He was very popular with his No. 30 shirt and was an excellent player. In one of the games he played on 11th November 1985, he was fantastic as he helped the Crusaders defeat the O鈥橬eill Titans 33-17.聽

Dan spoke about the first time he ever played on the field in 1985, and he was just a Grade 11 student. He caught a 33-yard touchdown pass, made three interceptions, and got to the end zone in a two-point conversion.

That same year, he won the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 4A football title with Holy Cross, and they retained the same title in 1986. In the university, he played for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with CIS- best of 749.聽

Dan Farthing was drafted in the 1991 CFL draft by the Roughriders and selected second overall. He spent 11 seasons with them, during which he scored 19 touchdowns and caught 384 passes for 5,098 yards. In 2009, he was inducted into the Roughriders鈥 Plaza of Honour.聽

Ella鈥檚 mother, SueAnn, is also not left behind when it comes to sport. She competed for the Saskatoon Rowing club and was, at a time, a member of the Huskies track and field team.聽

Despite coming from such a family of athletes, Ella works and trains hard.

As a Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School student, Ella joined the LeBoldus Golden Suns. The point guard played 15U basketball for Team Saskatchewan in 2015 and 2016 before upgrading to play at the 17U level in 2017 and 2018.

The Regina-born athlete played several games with the LeBoldus team and eventually helped them win the 4A city and provincial Girls High School Basketball Championship in 2018 and 2019.聽聽

While at LeBoldus, she wore the highly-coveted No. 10 shirt – the same number her father wore at one point during his playing career. Ella, speaking about her , said, 鈥淚 love the feeling that I鈥檓 wearing No. 10, because I know that people have seen my dad when he wore No. 10.鈥

She played with the No. 10 jersey for the last time at the Basketball Saskatchewan鈥檚 Senior All-Star Classic, along with other outstanding graduating high school players.

During her playing time in high school, she played 14 games where she made 1.5 points per game. In addition, she made 30.8% field goals, 40% free throws, 0.8 rebounds per game, and 0.6 assists per game.聽

After a successful basketball career at the high school level, Ella moved to the University of Regina in 2019. The school鈥檚 women鈥檚 basketball team had only eight players due to injuries, so Ella was readily received midway into their first semester.

While playing basketball with the University of Regina Cougars against Brandon, she hit 3-pointers and scored 10 points, which was the season鈥檚 high. The 20-year-old has, so far, played 14 games at Canada West with an average of 6.8 minutes in each contest.聽

Less than a year after joining the U of R Cougars, five-foot-five Ella Farthing was named a 2019/2020 Academic All-Canadian.

Ella enjoys working out at her father鈥檚 gym, Level 10 Fitness, where she worked as an administrator for a while. The family business, which opened in 2003, is owned by Dan, who doubles as director of training services and exercise specialist. SueAnn teaches fitness classes and also heads the gym鈥檚 physiotherapy department.

The Regina Cougars鈥 forward acknowledges that her parents鈥 support has helped her to stay on track. After an entire season of not playing due to COVID-19, Ella and the rest of her teammates are eager to resume playing professional basketball.
