Seabreeze High School loses to rival Spruce Creek in season opener

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — The Sand Crabs traveled to Port Orange on August 27 to play the Spruce Creek Hawks in what turned out to be one of the most exciting football games that Friday.

The field was wet from light showers of rain falling that night. Kevin Minckler scored the first points of the game off a 39-yard TD run to give the Hawks the lead. The first quarter ended 7-0. Minckler scored again in the second quarter after a 30-yard run. He put the Hawks up by 15 after a two-point conversion. The games seemed to be slipping away slowly from the Sand Crabs until Toma Pouncey got them on the board with 1:50 remaining in the first half.

Hawks took control in the end zone after a blocked punt at the start of the 2nd half. The drive ended with a FG. But Seabreeze was still determined to get back in the game. They scored their second points to end the 3rd quarter trailing 25-14.

The Sand Crabs scored a TD with 8:48 left on the fourth, closing the gap to 25-20. It was now anyone’s game at that point. But Kevin Minckler scored yet again for his third TD to extend the Hawks’ lead. Both teams played well, but Spruce Creek emerged as winners in the end with a final score of 32-20.
