Columbia defeats American Heritage Delray in season opener
LAKE CITY, Fla. — Columbia High School hosted American Heritage on Friday to play the first game of the regular season at 7:30 pm.
AHS Stallions got off to a great start. Jake Feinberg drilled a 34-yard FG to put the Stallions on the board first. Patrick Downes then threw to Brandy Butler for a 30-yard TD to end the first quarter leading 10-0.
The second quarter took a turn of events when Columbia LB Jaden Dunn picked off Downes and took it 44 yards to the house. Tolliver took a punt 55 yards to the end zone to give the Tigers a 13-10 lead. The Tigers were now in control of the game. Cincinnati commit Marcus Peterson made an unbelievable one-handed catch falling backward to put the tigers 27-0 up. At halftime, the score was 33-10.
AHS QB Downes threw a lateral to Tavares Parker, who hit Butler 48 yards for a TD. The score was now 33-16 in the third. Tolliver was on fire that night, he took another punt more than 70 yards to the house! The third quarter ended 46-16.
Downes tried to will his team back into the game again in the fourth, scoring on a QB keeper from 5 yards out. But in the end, Columbia comfortably won 46-23. It was a good performance by new coach Demetric Jackson and his Tigers.
