American Fork鈥檚 Maddux Madsen finds home in Boise State

AMERICAN FORK, Utah (BVM) 鈥 Last fall, American Fork quarterback Maddux Madsen was in the midst of a legendary junior season.

He tossed nine touchdowns in a September win over East (Salt Lake City) High School before throwing for another seven scores the following week. Through five games of his junior campaign, Madsen led the nation in both passing yards (1,883) and passing touchdowns (27).

Yet, despite the obvious talent and production to match, the signal-caller鈥檚 recruiting was virtually nonexistent. This time last year, Madsen had only garnered interest from Dixie State and a few Ivy League schools; his first Division I offer didn鈥檛 come until New Mexico stepped up in February.

But the American Fork standout kept belief that he鈥檇 end up where he belongs.

鈥淚 was in touch with so many people and I knew something good was going to come out of it,鈥 Madsen said of his recruiting process.

One reason for Madsen鈥檚 optimism was the close relationship he built with Boise State offensive coordinator Tim Plough. The pair first made contact in January and stayed connected even after Katin Hauser (St. John Bosco) committed to the Broncos in April as their QB for the 2022 class.

But when Hauser flipped his commitment to Michigan State last weekend, Plough had the perfect replacement candidate in mind. Boise State offered Madsen a scholarship on Tuesday and he accepted on the spot.

After hearing about his lack of size throughout the recruiting process, the 6-foot, 180-pound Madsen was pleased to hear that the Broncos cared about much more important things.

鈥淚t was awesome,鈥 Madsen said. 鈥淢y first phone call with them, that was like their big thing, 鈥榳e don鈥檛 care about size.鈥 Instantly I knew I鈥檇 have a close relationship with them.鈥

The Broncos鈥 latest 2022 commit is the nation鈥檚 quarterback and the No. 36 overall prospect in the state of Utah for the 2022 class. Madsen finished that aforementioned junior campaign with 4,044 passing yards and 51 total touchdowns. He even threw for 3,693 yards and 42 touchdowns as a sophomore, leading the Cavemen to the state championship before falling short to perennial power Corner Canyon.

The pass-heavy offense where four wide receivers are regularly on the field that Madsen has run at American Fork is the perfect segue to what Boise State will utilize on its blue turf. After all, the Broncos have been able to help quarterbacks like Kellen Moore and Brett Rypien reach the NFL.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a good offense for me since I run it now in high school,鈥 Madsen said. 鈥淚 just want to assume a leadership role, show people that I鈥檓 for that town and for Boise State.鈥
