Ride the Big Wave with high school elite boys lacrosse team

INDIALANTIC, Fla. — In the fall of 2019, Florida Tech assistant coaches, Tyler Oblong, Zach Wynne, and Billy Gibbs, formed a high school elite team called Big Wave. The team was founded with the goal of developing our players on and off the field, to help them reach their full potential, and prepare for the next level. With a successful fall season and a tournament in Long Island, NY, we reached our goal with a handful of players committing to take their athletic and academic careers to the collegiate level.

Upon refocusing after the pandemic and evaluating our county鈥檚 needs, founders of the club decided to mold Big Wave into Brevard County鈥檚 premier lacrosse program. Big Wave searched to find the best coaches for its players and gathered coaches from top high schools, colleges, and former collegiate level lacrosse players. All of the Big Wave staff shares the same vision for the program which is to develop new lacrosse players as well as compete for our county within our state.

鈥淗igh School lacrosse is on a lifeline in our county and in order to fix it we must start at the foundation with our youth,鈥 says Big Wave Founder, Tyler Oblong.

鈥淟acrosse has given me so much throughout my life. Friendships, life lessons, scholarships, and much more. Our goal is to help grow the game in Brevard County and provide a fun environment where kids can learn the game the right way, develop their skills, and hopefully have a blast doing it,鈥 said Big Wave Co-Founder, Zach Wynne.

Our first step was to host free clinics in order to gain exposure in the county. Our first clinic brought in 80 players ranging from U8-high school level. On April 25th of 2021, Big Wave hosted a try-out where over 100 players competed for a spot in the program. After the tryout, coaches were able to form 4 separate teams. Each team was formed with the intent to compete within the state, but yet develop and learn the game the right way. Big Wave had its first tournament in Orlando June 5-6 and will wrap up their season on Father鈥檚 Day weekend in South Florida.

The teams fared well at the Orlando Summer Faceoff Tournament.聽High School A went 4-1 then finished in 3rd place. They’re a talented group that will continue 聽to grow.聽 High School B played tough all weekend and will regroup for next tournament. The聽U12 team went 3-1 and finishing 2nd place in the event. They had a ton of fun, made friends and learned the game. Half the team was new to lacrosse and these were their first games.
