Germantown鈥檚 Madison Booker aims to continue winning ways
MADISON, Miss. (BVM) 鈥� During a sports season, coaches and players work together to reach the ultimate goal: a championship.
For the Germantown Lady Mavericks, that鈥檚 exactly what they did. Led by Gatorade MississippiGirls Basketball Player of the Year Madison Booker, they were able to reach the Class 6A state championship game for the first time in school history.聽
鈥淪he鈥檚 the best player, by far, to come out of Germantown,鈥� Germantown girls basketball head coach Jamie Glasgow said.聽

Currently ranked No. 7 in , Booker helped the Lady Mavericks to an overall record of 21-5. Booker just completed her sophomore season and has already been offered by multiple college programs, including Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss.聽
This past season, Booker averaged 18.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists. And although she just completed her sophomore season, Booker has been playing at the varsity level since eighth grade. During that stretch, the Lady Mavericks have an overall record of 64-15, according to MaxPreps.
鈥淢adison Booker has a great all-around game,鈥� Clinton High School girls basketball head coach Pearlene Fairley said in a. 鈥淪he has a set of skills that you have to game plan for every time, and she is just a force to deal with one-on-one.鈥�
Along with her successful high school season, Booker was invited to try out for the U16 USA Women鈥檚 Basketball team.

On June 18, it was announced that Booker would be part of the team. The U16 Women鈥檚 basketball team will begin preparations for the 2021 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) that will be played in Aug. 16-22 of this year in Santiago, Chile.
鈥淭he past two days were extremely competitive, which made it incredibly difficult to get down to 12 players,鈥� said U16 USA Women鈥檚 Basketball head coach Sue Phillips in . 鈥淚t鈥檚 never an easy decision to have to cut players who gave everything they had, but we feel that the 12 players we will be taking to Chile for the FIBA Americas U16s will give us the best opportunity to continue the USA鈥檚 success at the event and bring home another gold medal. This team has a lot of versatility, which is important in these competitions, and immense talent for this age level. I鈥檓 really happy with this team and I can鈥檛 wait to get back together for training camp in August.鈥�
For Madison and her teammates, the 2020-21 winter sports season was full of turmoil and confusion. Booker found herself in the eye of that storm. Lucky for her and her teammates, she will get another chance to hoist a gold ball.
鈥淚t was fun [to reach the state championship],鈥� Glasgow said. 鈥淲e started playing our best ball when we needed to. It鈥檚 fun to watch them play and get after it on the court. The team we had this year they all liked each other, they got along and they supported each other. That鈥檚 the big thing in sports; you got to have teammates that truly care about each other. [As for Madison] she put the time in and she鈥檚 going to keep on getting better and better. We鈥檙e working to win a state championship. We don鈥檛 want to come up short [again].鈥�
