VanLiew becomes latest FGCU athlete to win ASUN award
FORT MYERS, Fla. (BVM) — Cortney VanLiew may be one of the Eagles’ best players on the volleyball court, but she’s also one of their best people off of it; perhaps in the entirety of the Fort Myers, Fla. area.Â
Recognized for her commitment to education, honesty, student-athlete experience, fairness, health, ambition, respect, diversity, inclusion, leadership, responsibility and sportsmanship — the ASUN conference core values — VanLiew has been named one of the recipients for the Fall in Spring Winners for Life award.Â
Her impressive combination of success in athletics, academics and community service made her the obvious choice for the ASUN’s FGCU player selection. This past season, VanLiew was a two-time ASUN player of the week, registering 221 kills, 140 digs, 22 blocks and nine aces. Next season she returns for her fifth season, a graduate year, with her sights set on the FGCU program record for kills as she is currently just 50 short.Â
In the classroom, VanLiew has been equally as spectacular, becoming a three-time ASUN All-Academic team selection while compiling a 3.678 cumulative GPA in her undergraduate career.Â
Then, while remaining dedicated to her other ventures, VanLiew has managed to accumulate over 200 hours of community service. She has contributed her efforts to numerous projects such as Read Across America, the Naples Humane Society and the Project Life Movement. Her exemplary impact in many facets of life has helped her to etch her name into the ASUN and FGCU history books.
