Rye lacrosse enjoys special season
RYE, N.Y. (BVM) — After winning a Class C lacrosse title in 2019, Rye had a much more difficult opponent waiting in front of them in its quest for a first Class B title in 2021.
After an impressive season that saw the Garnets go 14-2, their toughest challenge awaited them as they faced off against Class B鈥檚 most winningest team. With early victories against John Jay and Mahopac, the Garnets rolled into the title game against Yorktown with built-up momentum after outscoring their opponents 22-5.聽
The scoring production from previous matchups would continue for the Garnets in the state title game, at one point outshooting their opponents 25-5. Led behind the work of junior faceoff specialist Johnny Hartzell, the Garnets dominated the time of possession with Hartzell winning 15 of his 22 faceoffs. A collective seven goals from midfielder Caden Whaling and attacker Liam Hurley would be enough to keep the Huskers at bay, as Rye picked up an 11-7 victory.
The Class B title win over Yorktown would cap off an incredible season by the Garnets, who proved their ability to play in the higher Class. Without a chance last year to compete in the Section 1 tournament, the Garnets looked forward to putting their name on the map throughout this season.聽
With two wins against Yorktown in the 2021 season, Rye looks to be a challenge for teams in Class B moving forward. They will look to continue their success moving forward with the Garnets returning many key starters for the upcoming season.
