Niwot girls and boys take 4A state track and field team titles
NIWOT, Colo. (BVM) — The Niwot High School girls and boys track and field teams added to their growing collection of state championship trophies as both captured the Class 4A team title at the state meet which wrapped up Saturday at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood, Colo.
It鈥檚 the fifth state title in nine years for the girls team, which dominated the competition on its way to a second consecutive 4A crown and outscored second-place Mullen by 135 points.
Not surprisingly, it was senior star Taylor James leading the way for the Cougars. The Stanford commit leaves Niwot as a 10-time state champion after capturing gold in the 200 and 400-meter dashes while also helping her 400 and 800-meter relay teams race to first place over the weekend.
While the Niwot girls dominated the field, Longmont made things a little more competitive in the boys meet before the Cougars pulled away on day two, finishing with 90 points — 31 points better than runner-up Longmont. The Niwot boys team鈥檚 second consecutive championship performance was highlighted by junior Zane Bergen, who shattered the 4A state meet record in the 1,600-meter run with his first-place time of four minutes, 9.51 seconds and also captured gold in the 800.
