Sacramento State football adds big-time transfers, including MTSU’s Asher O’Hara

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (BVM) – Sacramento State football on Tuesday announced the addition of three graduate transfers to the program, two of whom will be joining familiar faces this fall.

Quarterback Asher O’Hara played the last three seasons at Middle Tennessee where he earned second team All-Conference-USA honors in 2020. He threw for 4,690 yards and 32 touchdowns while rushing for another 1,744 yards and 17 touchdowns in 23 career games. O’Hara became just the second Middle Tennessee quarterback to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season as a redshirt sophomore in 2019 when he finished with a team-high 1,058 yards and nine touchdowns. He returned to the field this fall to account for 77.8 percent of the Blue Raiders’ total offense (2,561 total yards) while also being named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Wuerffel Trophy Watch lists.

O’Hara will have two seasons of eligibility remaining and will join his brother, Jace, who started at Sacramento State in the fall.

Offensive lineman Kooper Richardson joins the Hornets after appearing in 30 games for UC Davis and will once again team up with his younger brother, Kaden. The pair will be coached by their father, Kris, who’s the team’s associate head coach and offensive line coach. Kooper was named UC Davis’ most improved offensive player in 2018 and helped the Aggies to a share of the Big Sky title and a berth in the second round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

Cornerback Munchie Filer III played the last three years at Montana State after two seasons at Compton Junior College. He was a preseason All-Big Sky selection in 2019 but missed all but three games that season due to injury before Montana State opted out of the 2020-21 season. The Compton, Calif., native earned honorable mention all-Big Sky after leading the Bobcats with eight PBUs as a junior in 2018. Filer III finished that season with 40 total tackles and a pair of interceptions, including a 27-yard pick six.

Sacramento State’s 2021 opener on Sept. 4 at Dixie State will be its first game since 2019 when the Hornets won the Big Sky Conference title and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history.
