Savannah Country Day welcomes former football standout as head coach

SAVANNAH, Ga. (BVM) — Savannah Country Day has found its next head football coach in John Mohring, with the school announcing the hire at the end of May. The incoming coach will be a familiar name for many, after starring as a linebacker at Georgia Southern almost two decades ago.

Mohring will head the Hornets’ football program after spending the last four seasons at Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Fla. During his time with the Vikings, Mohring helped lead the Bishop Verot football team to back-to-back Elite Eight finishes. After three seasons as a defensive coordinator, Mohring took over the head coaching role last season, leading the Vikings to a 6-5 season.

Mohring’s coaching career began in 2011 after his playing days in the Canadian Football League came to an end. The former four-year starter at Georgia Southern had a decorated collegiate career, being voted as the squad’s most valuable player in 2005 and 2006 while serving as the team captain. After going undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, Mohring was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.

After stints in the Arena Football League and the Canadian Football League, Mohring began his coaching career with assistant spots at Valdosta State, Arkansas State and Tusculum College.

The incoming Savannah Country Day head coach will take over a football program that is looking to get back on track. Before a down year last year that saw the Hornets go 3-7, the program had been very successful, going 11-1 in 2019 and 7-4 in 2018. Mohring will look to move the program back in the right direction this upcoming season.
