CSU thrower Maria Muzzio earns All-American HM at NCAAs
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (BVM) 鈥 Colorado State University graduate student Maria Muzzio showed marked improvement with every step of her college track and field career as a Ram, and as the final CSU athlete competing in the 2020-21 calendar season this past weekend, she finished as an All-American honorable mention.
Muzzio earned the honor with a discus throw of 169 feet, four inches, which placed her 23rd at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Muzio finally made it to the championships in her final attempt after her throw of 181-9 earned her a 10th-place finish at regionals, a significant improvement from her 26th place finish in 2019 (166-2) and her 32nd place finish in 2018 (162-4).
鈥淭he stadium is so cool out here,鈥 Muzzio . 鈥淚t is a much bigger atmosphere with a lot of fans and energy, which is awesome to experience. Obviously, I did not do as well as I wanted to or how I expected, but I am still here and am blessed to have had the season that I did. I obtained a few PRs and am just happy that I made it this far to end my career at the highest stage in college.鈥
The Fairfax, Va., product, finished her career with a personal-best throw of 184-2, a mark achieved last month when she captured her second Mountain West title in the discus. Her first came as a freshman in 2018.
