Edgewood Mustangs claim Class 3A sectional title behind dominant pitching performance

ELLETTSVILLE, Ind. (BVM) — The Edgewood Mustangs have returned in the 2021 season looking to recapture the magic they had two years ago. In 2019, the team made a run all the way to state, and had high hopes of doing so once again before having its season canceled in 2020.

But this spring, the Mustangs have regained their form, and are on a similar path as the 2019 squad. Monday afternoon, Edgewood faced off against Sullivan — a team they defeated on its way to state in 2019 — for a Class 3A sectional championship.

This time around, it was all about the dazzling performance on the mound by pitcher Luke Hayden. Throwing 99 pitches, the Indiana University commit struck out an eye-popping 18 batters while throwing a no-hitter, improving his record to 7-2 on the season.

The game would be a nailbiter through the first five innings, but the Mustangs changed their fortunes in the sixth, loading the bases and scoring their first run on a wild pitch. The seventh inning is where things fell apart for Sullivan, as the team committed five errors to combine with two wild pitches, allowing the Mustangs to take a 7-0 lead.

The win improves the Mustangs’ record to 19-8. Surprisingly, the team started out just 4-7 on the 2021 campaign, but has gotten hot at the right time as it looks to get further in postseason play.

Next up, the Mustangs may find themselves in a tougher matchup as they will take on 17-4 Northview in the Danville Regional semifinals on Saturday.
