Martinsville鈥檚 Matt LaFary, a two-sport athlete, chooses to play football at Franklin College

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Matthew LaFary was destined to be an Artesian. His father, Mike, played high school football for Martinsville and his mother Julie was a cheerleader. Matthew started his football career with MJFL in fourth grade. From that young age, he knew right away football would be his sport. He continued playing football on the Junior Artesian’s travel team and he found his destined position as wide receiver. LaFary continued in this position through his senior year. Matthew鈥檚 talent stood out landing him on the varsity team his Sophomore year.

Matthew鈥檚 strengths as a football player are his speed, route running and toughness. His talent is in reading defensive plays and then running his routes on the field enabling him to be in the right place at the right time.聽He feels this talent is the reason Franklin College recruited him.

As a well-rounded athlete, Matthew also runs varsity track.聽He attributes his time in track to developing speed, explosiveness, acceleration and agility – all which compliment his role as wide receiver on the football field.

Matthew鈥檚 motivation comes from simply wanting to be the best version of himself every day. He is a big believer of 鈥渢he process鈥 and will always put process over product. The process is how you get to where you are.聽He stated process is everything as it builds real character. He also has the support of his teammates and family.聽They have been there for him throughout his football career. He states, 鈥淚 could not do the things I love every day without them.鈥

Matthew graduated in May and has chosen to continue his football career at Franklin College on an academic scholarship majoring in Health Administration and a minor in Sports Management. He chose Franklin College because of the great community, the coaches and facilities. He said Franklin reminds him of Martinsville and loves how the Martinsville community has always supported athletics. After college, Matthew would like to use his degree to work with a professional sports team.
