Bay City Western girls tennis claims third consecutive Bay County Championship
AUBURN, Mich. (BVM) — The Bay City Western girls tennis team has been a force locally over the last several years. After having its 2020 season canceled, the team has come back strong in 2021, picking up right where they left off.
Bay City Western took home its third consecutive title at the Bay County Girls Tennis Championship, making up for a lost season last spring. In 2020, the Warriors were expected to be one of the favorites in the league once again, and returned nearly all of their players to earn a title this year.
At the championship, the Warriors won five of eight team flights to score a total of 29 points. The next closest competitors were All Saints and Bay City Central with 14. The biggest boost for Western was winning all four doubles matches.
The No. 1 doubles team featured Leah Jankoska and Maggie Holman getting a victory, while the No. 2 team of McKenzie Hurd and Vivian Rahl did the same. The No. 3 team saw Julia Rajewski and Megan Pilarski also dominate, as did the No. 4 team of Autumn Simmer and Katelynn Hadd.聽
Brooklyn Buck was the lone singles winner for the Warriors at the No. 4 position. With seniors Buck and Hurd leading the way, Bay City Western became the first Bay County team to three-peat since 2010-2012, when the Warriors also accomplished the feat.
Other singles winners at the championship included Madison Beyer from Bay City Central at the No. 1 spot, and Sarah Michalak from Garber at No. 2. Beyer鈥檚 teammate, Susan Buchannon, also won as an individual at the No. 3 position.
No one can take away the team title from Bay City Western, however, and after a year of hard work and pushing through adversity, the Warriors have continued to display their local dominance.
