Northwood’s Cole Brooks named GLIAC Player of the Year

MIDLAND, Mich. (BVM) — There are not many hitters around the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) who can hit at the level Cole Brooks can. His sensational display at the plate this season has earned him GLIAC Player of the Year honors.

The outfielder led his team and the entire conference with a .447 batting average — tied for the eighth highest in GLIAC history — and also drove in 57 runs this spring. Last weekend against Wayne State, Brooks had an incredible seven-RBI inning in which he hit a grand slam and three-RBI double.

Although the team has been a bit up and down as of late, Brooks helped lead the Timberwolves to a 27-14 record and third-place finish in the conference. Now, he will look to propel Northwood even further in this weekend’s GLIAC tournament.

Brooks’ senior season concludes what has been a dazzling career at Northwood. In three years for the Timberwolves, the outfielder has batted .374 with 160 hits, 16 home runs and 116 RBIs.

He has continued to set program and conference marks with his performance this year with the fourth-best season batting average in Northwood history. Brooks is also second in the GLIAC in on-base percentage at .527, and third in both slugging percentage and total bases with .682 and 105, respectively.

The Bay City, Mich. native has impressively had two or more hits in 24 of the 41 games he has played this year. The GLIAC Player of the Year honor was the first for a Northwood player since Ed Clements in 1995.

Now, Brooks and the Timberwolves will plan to do battle with Davenport in their second game of the GLIAC tournament. After losing an extra-innings heartbreaker to Ashland in game one, Northwood will seek to rebound throughout the rest of the weekend.
