Sidney McIntosh the latest La Cueva player to win Gatorade award
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) 鈥 La Cueva High School fell short of winning a third consecutive Class 5A volleyball state title this past spring, but a Bear still earned the state鈥檚 biggest individual award for the third straight year.聽
Senior outside hitter Sidney McIntosh was named the 2020-21 Gatorade New Mexico Volleyball Player of the Year, becoming the fifth La Cueva player to win the award and joining former teammates Mariana Sharp and Brie Mortensen, who earned the honor in 2018 and 2019, respectively, after helping lead the Bears to state titles.
McIntosh racked up 1,082 kills over the course of her four-year varsity career and led La Cueva in that category each season. Her 352 kills as a sophomore were her most in a single season. She had 114 kills in seven matches this past spring when the Bears completed a COVID-delayed and shortened season with a 6-1 record and lost in the Class 5A state semifinals.聽
鈥淪idney is a dynamic outside hitter,鈥 La Cueva head coach Steve Archibeque . 鈥淪he has so much power and velocity that her hits are incredible to watch and hard to defend.鈥
McIntosh will continue her volleyball career at the NCAA Division I level in the fall and join former teammate and fellow Gatorade award winner Sharp at New Mexico State University.
