Historic season comes to an end for UNM women鈥檚 soccer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) 鈥 A historic season came to an end for the University of New Mexico women鈥檚 soccer team this past Friday. The Lobos were simply overmatched in a 6-2 loss to the No. 4-seeded TCU Horned Frogs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

UNM (10-2-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a 28th minute goal by Alesia Garcia, who helped the Lobos keep their season alive in the first-round victory over Navy, but TCU (12-1-2) dominated the second half by scoring six consecutive goals to run away with the victory and advance to the Sweet 16.

鈥淚 think we all knew going into it that we were pretty outmatched player for player,鈥 UNM head coach . 鈥淚 was really proud that we gave them fits in the first half, and then they came out in the second half and put on a show there for a little bit which is what good teams do. We came out with the idea that we would fight and try to disrupt the game, and I think we did that really well for as long as we could. Disappointed with the result, but certainly proud of our performance.鈥

Dyche and the Lobos have plenty to be proud of following an unprecedented, yet historic, season which was delayed and then shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only did UNM reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011 and for just the the third time in program history after beating San Diego State with a golden goal for the Mountain West Conference title, the Lobos began the national tourney with an RPI of 14, which is its highest ever entering the postseason. UNM then fought back and edged Navy in the first round to become the first women鈥檚 soccer team from New Mexico to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
