Woodstown senior and UPenn men鈥檚 wrestling commit wins third regional title
WOODSTOWN, N.J. (BVM) — Both Michael Conklin from Toms River East and Hunter Gandy from Woodstown High School were two-time regional champions going into the 2021 season. The two faced each other during the 145-pound South Region final on April 17 knowing only one would come out on top as a three-time champion.聽
It was Gandy who ended up victorious. He won his third regional title and he is the first wrestler in Woodstown HS history to reach such a feat. Gandy scored an early takedown, but it was a close match and he needed an escape in the third period for a 3-2 win over Conklin.
This is Gandy鈥檚 last shot competing at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) state tournament. If he wins, he will be the first wrestler in Woodstown HS to bring home the title. The two day NJSIAA boys wrestling championships will begin April 24 at Phillipsburg High School.聽
But no matter what happens for him next weekend, Gandy will still have many more opportunities to succeed out on the mat. Later this year, he will make the biggest move of his career by leaving South Jersey to wrestle on the men鈥檚 DI team at UPenn.聽
More on incoming freshman Hunter Gandy
Entering his senior season at Woodstown/Pilesgrove High School, Hunter is a three-time NJSIAA State Qualifier, three-time NJ Freestyle state champion and he has amassed a record of 110-18.
