Mountain West Player of the Week Gwen Maly leads UNM soccer into title match
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — The New Mexico Lobos women’s soccer team has a good shot to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade and Gwen Maly is a big reason why. The senior forward not only leads her team with 21 points on nine goals and three assists, she also leads the entire Mountain West Conference in points and goals.
On Monday, Maly picked up her second Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season after helping the Lobos notch two more victories against Wyoming and Colorado State last weekend. Maly had three goals and an assist for a total of seven points in the two matches as UNM continued its strong play this season.
The Lobos are 9-1 in their shortened spring campaign, which is the most successful one they’ve had since 2010 when they were 12-1-5 heading into the Mountain West Conference tournament championship. They went on to lose that title match to BYU but still earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Notre Dame in the first round.
Maly and the Lobos can assure themselves of their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2010 on Saturday when they host San Diego State in a cross-divisional match. The winner will be declared the Mountain West’s regular-season champion and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the national tourney which will begin April 27 in Cary, N.C.
