Richmond women鈥檚 golf earns three Patriot League golfer of the week awards in a month
RICHMOND, Va. (BVM) — What a start it has been for the University of Richmond women鈥檚 golf team. Since the season began just over a month ago on Feb. 21, the Spiders have been excellent in their return to the course as they have notched two wins over in-state William & Mary and are fresh off of a runner-up finish at the 12-team Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate on March 29, the best finish for the Spiders in an event with more than six teams since the Kingsmill Fall Intercollegiate in Sept. 2018.
This season, the Spiders have been led by a trio of top performances. In a month鈥檚 time, two Spiders golfers earned Patriot League Women’s Golfer of the Week honors.
On March 10, junior golfer Naomi Mitchell won the award when she shot a 4-over par at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C.. Her finish at the event gave Mitchell the No. 9 54-hole score in program history and also earned her the first weekly award honor of her career.

Two weeks later on March 24, Mitchell doubled-up the feat when she was again named the recipient of the honor after she shot rounds of 75 and 74 in a 5-over 149 in Richmond’s win vs William & Mary on March 21. The score gave Mitchell the best round for the Spiders in the contest and was tied for the best finish among the 13 competing golfers.

On March 31, Mitchell was joined by a fellow Spiders teammate in winning a Patriot League Women鈥檚 Golfer of the Week award when freshman Rory Weinfurther earned the honor. Weinfurther earned the honor after a dazzling showing at the Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate when she shot rounds of 76, 77 and 73 to finish at a 10-over par 226, good for second among 67 golfers competing in the event. The finish was the best by a Spiders golfer in an event with 40 or more golfers since Sept. 2017, putting the freshman in some elite company.

With Mitchell and Weinfurther leading the way, the Spiders will look to continue their hot trend as they prepare for the Cavalier Match Play at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Va. on April 6 and 7 before heading to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Patriot League Championship on April 24 and 25. With some of the most elite golfers in the conference this season, the Spiders will look to make noise at the championship event later this month.
