Lady Spartans get multiple recognitions during shortened, two month basketball season

SPARTA, N.J. (BVM) — The girls basketball team at Sparta High School was allowed to play a pandemic-shortened season of 15 games for the 2020-21 year. New rules also called for no state tournament, but on the upside, the Spartans had other things to reflect and be grateful for after they had their final game in March.

The Spartans went 14-1 and finished the season ranked out of 30 other schools in New Jersey. They were also named the 2021 Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) team of the year and head coach Catherine Wille was named as coach of the year.

The dynamic between the coach and the team led to exceptionally-well performances even by lower-classmen. Sophomore forward Brynn McCurry and guard Ally Sweeney were selected to the All-NJAC first team. Several others were named as honorable mentions and the team will have multiple of these top performing athletes back for next year.

The season went by in a flash considering that it lasted just 55 days. The Spartans are hoping to be back for full practices and games in the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Until then, there’s no doubt they’re putting in the time independently so that they can be ready to compete for the No. 1 spot in New Jersey.
