Jerkaila Jordan wins AAC Freshman of the Year
NEW ORLEANS (BVM) 鈥� This past Sunday, it was announced that freshman point guard Jerkaila Jordan was unanimously voted American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.聽
Jordan was just the second player from the American Athletic Conference to be named freshman of the year unanimously. She joins USF鈥檚 Kitiija Laksa who was the only other player to achieve this feat in 2016.聽 A native of New Orleans, the Tulane guard became the first athlete from the school to be named freshman of the year.
Jordan averaged 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists this season. She was also just one of two Green Wave players to start every game this season.聽
鈥�That award meant a lot to me just knowing that I came out this season and gave it my all and competed every day because it wasn鈥檛 all just [an] easy cakewalk,鈥� Jordan said. 鈥淭his season we had to work and earn a lot of things which we did. There are a bunch of amazing talented freshmen in this conference as well and I enjoyed playing against every one of them. Just overall I鈥檓 proud of myself and all the great things I accomplished this year.鈥�
During her freshman season, Jordan helped Tulane lead the conference points per game with 69.1. The Green Wave also led the conference in field goal percentage (.431). Jordan also helped her team finish fourth in the AAC. It was the highest finish for Tulane since 2013-14 when it finished fourth in Conference USA (CUSA).聽
Jordan joined Kolby Morgan, Taylor Emry, and Dynah Jones as the only four Tulane women basketball players to be named to The American鈥檚 all-freshman team.
Unfortunately, for Jordan and her teammates, they fell to No. 18-ranked South Florida on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championship. Jordan led the team with 22 points. After an incredible season for Jordan and the Green Wave, they鈥檒l look to build and come back stronger next season.
