Sam Ohotnicky looks to return Thoroughbreds to prominence
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (BVM) 鈥� Following the shortened 2020 college lacrosse season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Skidmore鈥檚 Sam Ohotnicky is set to begin the season as the captain for the Skidmore m别苍鈥檚 lacrosse team as they look to shock the Liberty League in a potentially shortened season.听
听As a three-year starter and captain, nobody is looking forward to the lacrosse season more than Ohotnicky. Not many juniors are named captain of their college team, but Ohotnicky fit the part from the beginning. It was almost a no-brainer when Thoroughbreds’ head lacrosse coach Joseph Martin selected the hard-working leader as team captain prior to his junior season.听
After a promising 3-2 start, the season was devastatingly cancelled due to the pandemic.
Even with a shortened season, Ohotnicky stayed motivated over the summer by creating a Facebook group with the teammates. The group required the team to post practice videos of themselves throughout the offseason. Many small things like this are why 翱丑辞迟苍颈肠办测鈥檚 leadership is unmatched.
On the field Ohotnicky is at the head of a very solid defense, joined by fellow senior Theodore Hereux. With multiple senior defensive poles, the Skidmore defense should be a problem for teams across the Liberty League.听
Throughout 翱丑辞迟苍颈肠办测鈥檚 college career he has 27 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. However, what Ohotnicky does best, doesn鈥檛 show up on the stat sheet. From anywhere on the field, you can hear Ohotnicky conducting his teammates to different spots on the field. This is one of the most important qualities a defensive player can have in lacrosse.听
With the start date of play being pushed back to March 1, it could seem as though the season may be in jeopardy. However, Ohotnicky keeps the team optimistic in the fact that he will do everything in his power to get his guys on the field. This optimism he brings is one of the other great qualities he possesses as a captain.
As the season is set to start the question still remains as to who will join Ohotnicky as his fellow captains for the 2021 season. With many seniors at all different positions, it should not be hard for Coach Martin to find worthy candidates to help lead the team to victory.听
In a very competitive conference Skidmore looks to take the next step as a program and make some noise in the Liberty League playoffs and potentially, the NCAA Division III playoffs.
